While Permeable Pavements have been in existence for some time, recent
federal regulations under the Clean Water Act have created new opportunities
in this field.
These regulations help reduce pollution of ground water. Permeable systems
allow rain water to percolate through the pavement, rather than creating
runoff. This type of pavement reduces the need for retention ponds and has
other long term environmental benefits. Although the Geo-Wrap Method works
well for many permeable paver applications, the Berm Method is preferred by
many contractors.
Since permeable pavers are installed over compacted, open-graded aggregates,
landscape spikes will not properly anchor the edge restraint. In order to
utilize spikes, a berm of + inch minus, dense-graded aggregate base
material, must be constructed around the perimeter. Once the jobsite has
been excavated, install and compact bermed base material until correct grade
and 18 inch finished width has been achieved. This is done before the open
graded aggregate is installed. This will provide a foundation PAVE EDGE can
be spiked into, maintaining pavement interlock without restricting
permeability.
Advanced Pavement Technologies has created Specifications for Construction
on The Bio-Aquifer Storm System (BASS Method) that includes the Berm Method.
